When you are planning to surprise your honey with an engagement ring, there are so many factors to think about. So here’s another one: her finger size. How on earth are you going to find that out?

“After fifty years of marriage, I decided to have a new setting for my old diamond engagement ring,” Gerva remembers. "I wanted to combine the diamonds from my engagement ring, with the diamonds on my grandmother’s watch, to make the new halo setting. I wanted something unique, sentimental, and brilliant.” She went to Plante Jewelers for this diamond jewelry remake, and they made her wishes come true.

“It was seven years since my husband passed. I’d stopped wearing my wedding ring. Basically,I wanted to do something with the diamond so that I could wear it again.” Eileen’s original engagement ring was essentially a simple and classic style--a single large diamond set in a gold ring. “I had it for at least 34 years,” Eileen recalls. With the jewelry redesign, it took on a new sentimental life, and essentially became wearable again--as an updated and more fashionable piece.

“The piece is probably about sixty years old,” says Ellen Jennings. But looking at the ring Plante Jewelers crafted for her, you wouldn’t know it. This piece of custom jewelry is white and yellow gold with a constellation of small diamonds arranged in the center around a single central gemstone. The new ring is fascinatingly ornate, yet has a practical shape and a pleasingly simple symmetry of design. “I didn’t want a plain ordinary ring,” said Ellen. “I wanted something where I put it on and people say ‘Oh my God!’”

You’ve received a beautiful piece of heirloom jewelry from a beloved relative or friend. Even though you love the warm feeling of having the remembrance of someone who is dear to you, the jewelry may not be suited to your personality. Maybe the ring you inherited from your great aunt is yellow gold and you prefer white gold. Or the earrings you received from a dear grandmother are too large for your taste.

These diamond earrings have been in my jewelry box for a few years now. I did enjoy wearing them, for a long time. My style has changed. I haven’t worn them in ages. The diamonds are nice and sparkly; it’s a shame to have them sit unused. It’s time for them to see the light of day!

Often I hear a customer say, “I inherited my grandmother’s ring but it just sits in a drawer. I haven’t been wearing it. I always wear white gold, and her ring is yellow gold. And I just don’t like the style. I love my grandmother and I feel guilty not wearing her ring.” These thoughts often lead us to design a new piece of custom jewelry.
